Chef German Nuñez – Biography

As a child in the small coastal town of Ilo, Peru where he was born, German helped his mother mix all-natural ingredients for the family ice cream parlour. His grandparents owned the town’s first tourist restaurant where he spent many after school hours.

As he got older his talents became apparent when he began working in the kitchen of a seafood restaurant. In between customers, he spent time creating new dishes that soon became favourites of the clientele.

He opened a pub at age 23 and was the first in town to offer Italian dishes to delighted customers, and before long he was catering to a full house every night.


His next restaurant, the Crazy Cow, won a press award for best steakhouse and grill. German then traveled to the capital, Lima, to enrol in several culinary workshops in order to expand his knowledge of world cuisine.  


He came to London in 2003 with the dream of sharing the exotic flavours of his native Peruvian cuisine with Canadians and opened Rocoto Peruvian Cuisine, which remained in operation until 2007. German then worked for different catering companies and restaurants around London, including Che Restobar and Aroma.

He has traveled to more than 40 countries, where he has had the opportunity to learn more about other techniques and ingredients and draw on them for inspiration for his exciting new venture…EMPANADAS. Having seen the potential in this tasty South American treat, German has created a line of empanadas (a South American “hot pocket”) with flavours from around the world.

Chef Nuñez is happiest when in the kitchen preparing South American and international dishes with his own personal flare.
